Artist's Statement

My artistic practice focuses on drawing and printmaking. My work references the history of botanical art and the empirical collections and cataloguing involved in the study of botanical science.  

Once, when visiting my childhood home, I decided to look for my dried flower collection I had made when at school.  I couldn’t find it, but came across my mother’s dried flower collection, made in the 1970’s and 80’s.  Around the same time I visited the Darwin Centre (2010) at the Natural History Museum and became interested in and read about Herbariums and the art of collecting and collating biological specimens for research.  Helping us to create a natural history and helping to understand the biology of life.

Through my drawing I hope to articulate a personal ‘herbarium’ that responds to the collection of pressed flowers, my history, my hope, my optimism and that refers to the nature I love and it’s surroundings.  Recently, I have been drawing living flowers and am starting to research historical flower paintings and drawings. 

Of course, I have to acknowledge a rich history when researching the painting of flowers.  Beautiful still lives with symbols and morals, talking of the transience of life and the vanity of earthly pleasure.  A wealth of 17th century women artists and women collectors.

Well Mr Lerange.  I will fall into the trap of flower painting with as little femininity as I can muster!!

Observation produces questions in one’s mind and further research develops.  I have looked at Michael Landy and his series of drawings (Nourishment 2002), where he has collected and catalogued weeds, picked up from urban sites. Within this context I have been reading Richard Mabey’s ‘Weeds’ . 


My artistic practice helps me to look outside of my own life and to see the world.  It helps me to relate to it with curiosity and to understand that I am part of it and not separate from it.  Ecology and stewardship are important to me, and since my research as an artist, I have come to see that we do not exist in isolation, but as part of a whole.  Without plants we wouldn’t survive.


I am interested in the indigenous and wildflowers, especially in my local area and my drawings are examinations of some of these flowers.  If I have drawn them it is because I have been excited by their shape and beauty.  Coming from suburbia and its tidy gardens, I enjoy the plants that break through the concrete and walls and grow, beautifully and subversively. They can be part of the heritage of a place and each plant has a story, a myth or a legend attached to it.  Enjoy the stories.
